About Citroen Cars
Citroen’s automotive history dates all the way back to 1919, when founder Andre Citroen launched his marque’s first model, the Type A. Prior to that, the entrepreneur began by manufacturing double helical gears (hence the double chevron logo) and, during the Great War, munitions shells.
Utilising similar production techniques to those employed by Henry Ford in the States, Citroen was able to produce more cars than many of its European competitors, and got off to a flying start. Andre Citroen was a true visionary; his company rolled out a dealer network across France and sold vehicles complete with bodies, at a time when most manufacturers sold chassis which then had to be bodied by a coach builder. He was all about making motoring accessible to the masses.
The company’s vehicles evolved rapidly, with each subsequent generation ushering in new styling flourishes and becoming more distinguishable as a Citroen. And few cars on the road were as distinguishable as the Traction Avant, which arrived in 1934. One of the most regularly cited examples of Citroen’s creativity and mould-breaking genius, this pioneering machine had a monocoque construction and front-wheel drive - in sharp contrast to its peers. This was to become the blueprint for the vast majority of cars on the road today.
Three years after the conclusion of the Second World War, the company unveiled the 2CV - a low-cost people’s car which got France moving in a big way. Famously designed to traverse ploughed fields with a basket of eggs on the passenger seat (and keep them intact), this rugged and compact vehicle was affectionately known as the tin snail,’ and didn’t cease production until 1990.
In 1955, Citroen launched the DS 19, a revolutionary saloon car which incorporated too many innovations to list here. Its out-of-this-world, futuristic design made car companies the world over sit up and take notice, cementing Citroen as a company not afraid to think outside the box.
Despite merging with Peugeot in the 70s, Citroen continued to blaze forwards, seemingly caring little about what its rivals were up to. It persevered with the likes of hydropneumatic suspension into the 2000s, though toned things down a little styling-wise with cars like the Saxo and Xsara Picasso - both of which were smash hits.
In recent years, the manufacturer has been on a roll, launching a number of quirky new models which have captured the public’s attention - and won their custom. If there’s one thing we can be sure of about Citroen, it’s that it will never blindly follow its competitors: this is a company with innovation in its blood, one that’s not afraid to do things its own way.
