Used Vauxhall Models

The UK was once a haven for vehicle manufacturers, with countless brands appearing at the beginning of the 20th century to cater for the boom in demand for personal transport. Sadly, most of these names have long since disappeared from our roads, but there's one British brand dating from 1903 that's still very much alive and kicking.

That brand is Vauxhall. Now owned by Stellantis - itself a merger of Fiat, Chrysler, Peugeot and Citroen - Vauxhall is Britain's oldest-surviving car maker and is understandably proud of that heritage. Twinned with German manufacturer Opel, Vauxhall's models are usually identical, badges aside.

And there are many models to choose from. Whether you're after a compact supermini, a spacious people-mover or anything in between, Vauxhall has you covered. It may not be able to match the prestigiousness of BMW, Audi or Mercedes, but Vauxhall builds practical and affordable cars for the masses - and it remains one of the UK's best-selling brands as a result.

Vauxhall Corsa

Everybody has, at some point in their life, had an experience with a Vauxhall Corsa. Perhaps you learnt to drive in one, it was your first car, or you've spent hours in the passenger seat of your friend's example. That's because the Corsa has long been one of the UK's best selling cars, giving the Ford Fiesta a run for its money to take second place in 2020. This compact supermini is now more advanced - and more desirable - than ever before, and is a worthy choice in what is now a crowded segment.

Key features:

  • Effortless to drive, the Corsa is particularly at home on busy city streets
  • Plenty of space inside and surprisingly practical in five-door form
  • A range of trim levels and colour options give buyers plenty of choice

Vauxhall Astra

Another familiar sight on British roads, the Astra has been the car of choice for thousands of families since it was first introduced way back in 1979. Competing directly with the Ford Focus, the Astra's USP is value - much like other models in the Vauxhall range. It's available in 'Sports Tourer' estate, hatch and coupe versions; we discuss the latter separately below.

Key features:

  • The Astra is a hard-working and dependable machine, happy to pile on the miles without throwing a mechanical tantrum
  • Buyers are spoilt for choice, with an array of engines and trim levels available on the second-hand market
  • Depending on the trim level, Astras are generously equipped and have plenty of tech to play with

Vauxhall Astra GTC

Built to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Scirocco, the GTC coupe is a very different-looking machine to the more utilitarian Astra hatch. If you want an Astra but don't have children, here's your answer; the GTC shares the base car's low running costs and efficiency but has a much more attractive shape - and beats its competitors when it comes to practicality.

Key features:

  • Coupe roofline and revised front and rear styling makes the GTC stand out...
  • ...but it remains cheap to run and reliable
  • Even though it does away with the two rear doors of the Astra hatch, the GTC has a roomy cabin and capacious boot

Vauxhall Insignia

Replacing the Vectra, the Insignia arrived in 2008 and made a big impression - particularly on fleet buyers. Well equipped and offering a surprisingly compliant ride, the Insignia was more aerodynamic than its predecessor and had more efficient engines, a combination which made it perfect for racking up motorway miles. In short, the Insignia offered excellent value for money - and still does on the second-hand market.

Key features:

  • Excellent value, with generous levels of equipment for the money
  • Efficient and cheap to run, making it a great option for those who travel far and wide on a regular basis
  • Pleasingly cosseting ride and a comfortable, well put-together cabin

Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer

The estate version of the Insignia adopted the 'Sports Tourer' moniker, being so-named due to its sleeker, more flowing design. Gone are the days of Vauxhall estates being mere boxes on wheels; the Sports Tourer managed to offer impressive practicality without compromising on style.

Key features:

  • Much like the Insignia hatchback and saloon, the Sports Tourer had plenty going for it in terms of comfort, equipment and overall value for money
  • Longer and wider than a Vectra estate, benefiting cabin space
  • All-weather-capable four-wheel drive versions were offered

Vauxhall Vectra

Another favourite amongst company car drivers, the Vectra bowed out in 2009 to make way for its successor, the Insignia. It certainly had a good run though, as the first-generation model made its debut in 1988. During that time, the Vectra sold in huge numbers - and although the last example of the model rolled off the production line over a decade ago, it remains a common sight on UK roads.

Key features:

  • The Vectra offers affordable, practical motoring. It may not have the bells and whistles of its younger brother, the Insignia, but it's a dependable and spacious family car
  • Saloon, hatchback and estate body styles to choose from
  • Comfortable ride, with suspension tuned for UK roads

Vauxhall Zafira

Another British motoring stalwart, the Zafira people-carrier does just that in safety and comfort, without costing the earth to run. When it burst onto the scene in the late '90s, the Zafira was something of a revelation for families. Its pioneering Flex 7 seating system made life easy, the rearmost seats able to fold flat with minimal effort. It remained a big seller until the sharp rise in demand for SUVs killed it off in 2018.

Key features:

  • Extremely useful and versatile car, able to seat seven with ease or transport bulky objects with the rear seats folded down
  • Based loosely on the Astra, meaning running costs are low and reliability is high
  • Enjoyable to drive long-distance, with plenty of onboard equipment to keep passengers happy
